About Us

Bhatkal used to be a sleepy town four decades ago. A quiet town surrounded by beautiful Western Ghats on one side and Arabian sea on the other. In this totally unknown and backward town, a few illustrious and knowledgeable citizens wanted to press home their intention to do Banking business under the banner of Urban Co-operative Banking movement with an intention to serve common man. Their sole intention was to serve the middle class and lower middle class people in the society. Thus the Bhatkal Urban Co-operative Bank was born in the year 1964 with Mr. Kazia Mohammed Hassan as its President and Mr. K.A.H. Basha, M.A, L.L.B was the first Manager.

Mr. A.K. Hafizka, an eminent internationally acclaimed personality was providing the encouragement and guidance needed for the development of Bank. Initially nobody gave serious thought towards the existence of Bank as the result it limped on till 1990. Suddenly Bank started to blossom up and opened its first branch in the nearby Murudeshwar town known for its temple and scenic beauty. The Bank went on to open branches in Bazaar-Bhatkal, Gangolli, Shiruru, Kundapur and Mangalore. It is not an exaggeration to say that wherever the Bank opened its branches, they were instant success.

Mr. Kazia Mohammed Hassan was a founder President of the Bank. Mr. K.A.H. Basha, M.A., LLB, was the first Manager of the Bank. The Bank was registered on 28.10.1964 and commenced the Banking operation on 16.02.1965.

Mr. S.U. Talkhani, B.A., B.Com., LLB was the Bank's legal adviser. Bank showed a net loss of Rs.5168.04 in the first Balance Sheet of 1964-65. The Bank crossed the breakeven point in 1966-67 with a net profit of Rs.10,013.15. Thereafter the Bank never looked back. Bank moved its Registered Office and Main Branch to the centrally located own building in Bhatkal in the year 1985.
